UKULELE TIME!
Dear Tyson Families,
I am pleased to announce that we received funding from DonorsChoose.org to purchase a full class set of ukuleles for the music room. This gives every student access to one instrument during music class.
Many students have asked about the possibility of purchasing their own ukuleles. Purchasing your own is NOT mandatory! However, there are several options when it comes to purchasing a ukulele should you choose to do so. Please refrain from purchasing a ukulele from a grocery or toy store as many of them are just that, toys that do not stay in tune and may end up costing just as much (or more) as a decent quality instrument anyways.
If you would like to shop local at Alaska Music and Sound, Tyson Students are eligible to receive a 10% coupon on all ukuleles and accessories. Please contact me if you have any questions about this.
If you are interested in purchasing an inexpensive ukulele online, try searching the following brands on Amazon, eBay or another online vender of your choice. Vangoa sells 21 inch Soprano ukuleles for a reasonable price (approx $23) and they work really well for beginners. For a slightly better quality ukulele, try searching for a Mahola Rainbow Series Soprano ukulele. We use Mahola ukuleles in the Tyson Music Room. They come in a rainbow of colors, as you can see when you scroll down the page. I’ll be glad to tune them up the first time after they arrive.
There are more professional grade brands that you can purchase local and online. Should you have questions about these brands, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you are looking for additional accessories, I would suggest the Snark Ukulele Tuner, which can be found at one of our local music stores, or on Amazon. I would be happy to teach your student how to use it.
Want to practice at home? Some amazing YouTube Chanels with ukulele tutorials and play-alongs include: the Ukulaliens - Ukulele Club, Ukeplayalongs, and Chynthia Lynn Music.
Another awesome resource for FREE ukulele songs is: DoctorUke.com (see below). Dr. Uke is a real doctor and this is a website of his favorite ukulele songs. You can click on a song, and print it off for yourself.
